Luke Scriven is an assistive technology specialist for the Vision Forward Association. The London-native discusses the possibilities of assistive technologies and shares what eSight did for one of his clients living with Stargardt’s Disease.

What inspired you to enter the industry?
While studying to become a dispensing optician in England I was required to complete a module on ocular diseases, and this led me to become interested in the field of low vision and blindness. When I moved to America a few years later I took the opportunity to enter the field, and by happenstance started working specifically with assistive technology – and I’ve never looked back!
What’s a common misconception (about low vision) you’d like to dispel?
I have worked with a lot of seniors who are losing their vision due to macular degeneration, and there is commonly a belief that vision loss will mean the end of their ability to live a normal and fulfilling life. This simply isn’t true in this day and age, where technology can really level the playing field. It is often necessary to adjust to doing things differently, but with some effort and the help of people knowledgeable in the field it is entirely possible to live the life you want to live, despite your vision loss. I always like to tell people that if there’s something they want to do, there’s a way to do it – it’s just a case of figuring out how.

How did you learn about eSight?
eSight was brought to my attention through my role as an assistive technology specialist when they released their first model. It was exciting to see an advancement of technologies previously showcased in devices such as LVES and the Jordy, and the promise of wearable assistive technology to provide a multi-purpose tool that operates in a more natural manner than traditional CCTVs offered a glimpse of the future.

What was their eye condition?
Stargardt’s Disease
What challenges were they facing?
Their main goal was the ability to navigate unfamiliar environments, which was difficult because of their inability to read signage.
What prompted you to recommend eSight?
eSight is one of the few wearable assistive technology devices for vision loss that can be worn while walking, and as far as I’m aware the only one which has been built from the ground up with this in mind. The bioptic tilt function is very effective in helping a person navigate, and combines well with the lightweight headset design. It is definitely a highlight of eSight!
